Al Bumbry LvS Bat Question
I have a question regarding an Al Bumbry LvS bat. It is a C243 and is 34 inches long with a cupped end. I was told that this was bought from the Orioles many years ago. Does anyone know if Bumbry used this model bat?
Many thanks for all of your help!
Bradley

Re: Al Bumbry LvS Bat Question
Although we do not have Bumbry's complete records, the reference book AMERICA'S BAT shows a "Smoky" Bumbry whose most ordered H & B model was a C243 (often cupped) with dimensions of 34 inches / 32 ounces. It is likely that this is actually Al Bumbry, but I could find no reference for "Smoky" being a common nickname for Al Bumbry. His frequently cited nickname was "Bee" or "Bumblebee," although "Smoky" could have been a reference to his speed and baserunning ability.
An interesting bit of trivia-- Al Bumbry was awarded a Bronze Star in Viet Nam.

Re: Al Bumbry LvS Bat Question
Mike-
Thanks for your help. It is most appreciated. Bumbry is a war hero, a baseball hero, and a super nice guy all in one!!
Nate-
I'd like to hold on to this bat, but might be interested in a trade for other Oriole items. You can e-mail me at bradleyryon@windstream.net.
Thanks!
Bradley
