NFL Captain patch stars 2007-2010

What purpose do the stars on NFL Captain's patch serve, the four stars ?
( I know 1 gold star is for 2007, 2 gold stars is 2008, & so on)
Here is a Captain patch with 1 gold star the other 3 are in silver. The jersey was used in 2007.
Why would that information needed to be known ?

The gold stars tell you how many years they were a captain.

I imagine that the stars are a way for the team to recognize/reward guys who are consistent leaders in the locker room.

I wonder if the NFL has a different color or style captain's patch for players that surpass the 4 stars. We'll have to wait a few more seasons to find out as some guys will be hitting 4 stars next season.

Hi,

The other stars aren't silver, they are blank. As a player is elected captain for another year, another gold star is added. I've heard that if someone is captain for their 5th year, another row of stars will just be added below the existing patch but haven't been able to confirm this. Guess we'll just wait and see....unless your BRONCS fans!!

The BRONCS elected more players as captains than the league would allow to wear the patch so last year none of the BRONCS captains wore patches. Not sure if they'll do the same this year or not.
