Does anyone still know the value of baseball cards?

    Hi,

I'm seeking some help & knowledge from you collectors out there. I have an itch to purchase a set of baseball cards that I'm going to turn into a framed autographed project to put in my office. I've always been intrigued by the 1999 Upper Deck Piece of History 500 HR bat cards. I have a individual who is selling the whole set with the new Garry Sheffield card. (Yes, I know, stupid me for buying those sorry sports cards with a piece of a bat that is way overprice).

The set does not include the #BR Babe Ruth /50. In turn they have the #PH Babe Ruth version /350. What should I anticipate paying for this set with the Babe Ruth & without the Babe Ruth. None of the cards are graded but are in NRMT-MINT condition

    Thank you for your time.

Re: Does anyone still know the value of baseball cards?

    Tay -

I still do some cards and keep my Beckett On-Line Price Guide to check price.

The 1999 UD Piece of History GU Bat Card set includes:

#ARM Hank Aaron/ Babe Ruth/ Willie Mays SP Item has no pricing.

#XXX Instant Winner Card Item has no pricing.

    #BR Babe Ruth/ 50 #/50 Item has no pricing.

    #PH Babe Ruth #/350 $1,000.00

    #EB Ernie Banks #/350 $250.00

    #EM Eddie Mathews #/350 $300.00

    #EM Eddie Murray #/350 $200.00

    #FR Frank Robinson #/350 $200.00

    #HA Hank Aaron #/350 $300.00

    #HK Harmon Killebrew #/350 $200.00

    #JF Jimmie Foxx #/350 $200.00

    #MM Mickey Mantle #/350 $600.00

    #MO Mel Ott #/350 $200.00

    #MS Mike Schmidt #/350 $150.00

    #RJ Reggie Jackson #/350 $120.00

    #TW Ted Williams #/350 $300.00

    #WM Willie Mays #/350 $250.00

    #WM Willie McCovey #/350 $120.00

So you're looking at a total set value of around $4,500.00 (It's actually $4,390 for these listed, I'm adjusting for the Sheff as I don't see it listed)

    Hope this helps!!!

an aaron and a banks card sold recently for around $100 each on ebay so like many inserts their value will not hold. thats about 1/3 of what Chris quoted. maybe you can get the whole set for $1500 or less.

I agree that you can get most of them for below BV, but in the card industry, Ruth, Mantle and Williams still command almost full BV, so be ready to shell out some dough for the big boys...

I say forget all about scrubs like Ruth, Mantle, Williams, etc. and drop 20X that amount for a signed Strasburg card

I remember that set. I used to be a huge collector of game used cards and I remember that set as being the most highly desirable set out there. It brings back the days when collecting cards was actually fun, and the game used cards actually had value to them. Now they're over-produced, and worth not even $5 a piece now.

I'd say get the set, but only if you're willing to drop a LOT for the Ruth card. Those sell for the highest in the set.

                so [4500-1900 (Ruth, Mantle, Williams) / 2 ] + 1900 = $3200 a reasonable offer for the entire set or too high?

Re: Does anyone still know the value of baseball cards?

Thank you to everyone who responded to my thread. Even the crack with the blue boarder masterpiece card. That was pretty funny!

As I already mentioned my idea is to turn this set in to a framed autographed display piece for my office. So this is just the starting point for me in dropping a boat load of cash. In the back of my head I had in the lower range of $3000 for the complete set with the Babe Ruth /350. My ultimate goal is to pick up the Babe Ruth /50 that is actually part of this set and sell off the /350 one as it was not intended as an insert for the 500 HR set.

My question now is - how much should I discount off if I don't take the Babe Ruth /350? And any idea what the Babe Ruth /50 will cost? There is a guy on eBay that has the whole set plus both both Babe Ruth cards and he wants $8000 for everything. Everything is graded PSA 9 or 10, but really I could care less. I actually prefer mine not to be graded.

                    Thank you,
                    Taylor

                      remove the Ruth 4500 - 1000 = 3500 value

                      I'd pay 80% on the Mantle and Williams = .80 X 900 = $720
                      and 50% on the other cards in the set. = 3500 - 900 = 2600 @ .50 = $1300

                      so $2020

He might says I won't break up the set but tell him that he has the wrong Ruth card so its not a complete set afterall.

Personally, I think there's better items to display on the office wall for that amount of cash. To each their own tho. Good luck.
                      Regards,
                      Joel S.

                        Joel,
Thanks for the math calculations. That's about what I was thinking. And yes, I agree that there are many other things I could purchase for what I'm going to spend on this project but I pretty much have what I need for my personal game-used memorabilia collection. Of course it will always be a never ending adventure. I think what intrigues me about this set is that this set came out during my childhood and I remember that it was the most talked about set to have! Just to have one of the cards would have been a dream! Now, I can't stand baseball cards but I want something that will bring me back to the good old days!
