Players Using Equipment For More Than One Season?

A question for experts out there...mainly bat experts.

Is it a common practice for a player to use a bat that is ordered and stamped "08" in 2009? (for example)?

    Hi Jeremy,

I can't remember the player, but I did see a photo from this year and the player was swinging a 2009 LVS bat, I could clearly see the 125th logo that was only on 2009 bats.

      Jeremy:

I wouldn't say it's common, but it happens.

In his first season with the Cubs (2003), Moises Alou gave me a 2002 Astros bat. Similarly, Brant Brown, a Pirate in 1999, gave me a 1998 Cubs bat (both Rawlings).

Josh hamilton used a couple 09 stamped LVS's earlier this year. It is not exactly common but it certainly happens from time to time.

          Thanks for the responses...

I have a David Ortiz 2008 2 tone Rawlings that i am trying to photomatch and i cant find much from 2008, so was going to look into 2009 in the hopes that I may find the pic from that season.

I have a Billy Butler bat that was manufactured and marked with his #21 late in his 2007 rookie year. The #21 on the knob was scratched out and replaced with his 2008 #16.

Also have a Kevin Seitzer 1991 Royals bat with his 1992 Brewers number #20 on the knob.

And an Alex Gordon, block letter rookie bat with his 2008 second year #4, wore #7 in 2007.

I'm sure there could be others, but those are the ones I know for sure.

This is a great question..I think we have seen players use bats made in a previous season..is there ever a point I wonder where a bat would be considered to old??

I have a perfect example of this.... I have a 2010 used photomatched (stamped 09) and signed Orlando Cabrera game used bat. Because in 09 he was with the Twins he order the Rawlings pro with the blue ring. My bat has handle tape over the blue ring and pine tar all over it. Hope this helps.

Here's an example of Jorge Jimenez in 2010 using Dallas McPherson's bat who was released by the Marlins at the end of Spring Training 2009 and saw limited playing time. Makes you wonder if it's an 08 or 09 bat.

As late as last week (7/21), I noticed Cody Ransom using a LS bat with the 125th anniversary logo when the Phillies visited St. Louis.

I forgot this one earlier...a Ricky Gutierrez Indians bat given to me by a Tribe coach during 2007. Gutierrez played for Cleveland in 2002-03. The bat was received on the heels of a Tribe interleague series, so I'm hypothesizing that a Tribe pitcher stumbled across it and decided to use it for his rare hitting duties.

I have a 2006 chase utley Marucci used in 2007, which I have photo and video matched. I also recently bought a 2008 chase utley marucci bat that was used in the 2009 NLDS, I have this one video matched. I believe this bat was held back in 2008 to be checked and tested and then was recent to chase in late 2009, just my guess.
