    MEARS 2001 Padres Jersey Auction?

MEARS current auction features a 2001 game used Padres jersey of Rickey Henderson. The jersey looks nice except for one thing. It's a pinstripe jersey. Being a longtime collector of Henderson gamers, I'm not real sure the Padres wore this style in 2001. The description states that 2001 was the last year they wore pinstripes. If I'm not mistaken, in 2001 the Padres wore a solid home white, a road grey, and a navy blue alternate. I couldn't find any photos showing Rickey or any other Padre wearing this pinstriped style during that year. If anyone can provide their input it would be appreciated. I've always been a big supporter of MEARS and their research so quite possibly I'm mistaken.

With that said, the discussion should be over, right? Well, Getty Images has over 800 Padres images from 2001, and execpt for one player on photo shoot day, I can't find a single picture of a player in a pin-striped jersey from 2001.

So, either this jersey was made for Rickey before they changed to solids (someone needs to email By The Numbers about this error) or could this jersey have been from 1986-1987 and misdated? I didn't look at the tags to help determine an era.

Re: MEARS 2001 Padres Jersey Auction?

According to the San Diego Padres section of MLB Game Worn Jerseys of the Double-Knit Era, in the jersey section the Padres discontinued the pinstripe jerseys after the 2000 season, with the jersey style itself spanning from 1991-2000. However, when you look at the front section it lists the Padres as having a Home White Pinstripe in 2001.

The tagging style, according to KingJammy24's tagging era dates to the 2000 season, so it seems the tagging is appropriate.

With all that being said, I was not able to locate any images throuh Getty or elsewhere of any active players on the team wearing this style jersey in either 2000 or 2001. However, there are a few baseball cards, such as 2001 Bowman cards of Jake Peavy that show him wearing this style. (However, he was not on the big league club until 2002 and I'm not sure when the photo was taken.)

Another two possibilities for the jersey, if the style was not worn during the regular season, could be that the style was worn during 2001 Spring Training, but discontinued before the regular season and that's why the jersey would have been issued to Henderson, but we're not able to find photos. Or it could be a jersey that was used by Henderson to be introduced as a member of the Padres again, but I could not find photos of such a press conference. These are just thoughts and at this time I have nothing to back either idea.

This quoted section is in reference to regular season play and not Spring Training photos as well. Along with trsent, I was only able to locate the few images of Xavier Nady wearing the pinstripe during the 2001 Spring Training photo shoot.

With all that being said, Getty Images does not have photos from each and every game from either of 2000 or 2001 seasons.

    Joel,
The HOF database uses the same format as the BY The Numbers.
I'm familiar with the By the Numbers pictures of uniforms. I'm not even sure about the accuracy of their work either. They didn't picture the solid white or the blue alternate in their data base. We know they were worn during 2001. There are hundreds of player photos from that year wearing these styles. Just no pinstriped jerseys. Rickey wore this pinstripe style during his first stint with the Padres in 1996, but those jerseys did not have the MLB logo in the back. Thank you everyone for your help.

The second thought is a possibility...When the White Sox signed Ralph Garr for the 1976 season, he wore a 1975 #48 jersey (Lamar Johnson red-pinstriped home gamer) during the introductory press conference. The Sox, in '76, wore the pajama style jerseys that were Bill Veeck's brainchild. I know this because an autograph collector of the era who went to the affair to seek signatures, saw that, after the room emptied, the jersey was left behind on a chair, and helped himself to it...he eventually dealt it to me.

If you look closely at the back of Henderson's jersey, you'll see an American flag. Didn't all MLB teams wear American Flags on their jerseys after the 911 attack on America in 2001?

All teams did wear American Flag patches over the MLB logos after 9/11 in 2001. However, that could just mean that the Henderson MEARS currently has up was worn pre-9/11.
