Re: American memorabilia
I have heard of, and know many of the problems with American Memorabilia, but this I have never had happen before or heard of.
I have bid a few times on their items, but I had photomatched the items, so I was sure of authenticity, so I have never had any problems with their site, although I do know the issues.
I have never heard of American Memorabialia shill bidding.
That is just me, maybe someone else could share something different.

Re: American memorabilia
They have hidden reserves and it plainly states on their website that they reserve the right to bid up any item to that reserve. It is kinda like shill bidding i guess but they run the risk of they themselves being the winning bidder. If you look thru all the "rules" on their site you will find all that info.

Re: American memorabilia
It's rule #9. It's up to every bidder to know the rules that you are agreeing upon in order to bid in their auction.
9. Reserve Auctions
Unless explicitly stated otherwise by AMI, each Lot is being sold with reserve as a reserve auction. These terms are applicable to all reserve auctions. AMI and seller reserve the right to withdraw any property before and during the sale of such property. The seller also reserves the right to reject any and all bids for any reason. The reserve price may not be disclosed. All bids are raised in ten percent (10%) increments and AMI, at its sole and complete discretion, may reject a nominal bid advance. AMI reserves the right to place a bid on any Lot on behalf of the seller up to the amount of the reserve, if any. AMI will not specifically identify bids placed on behalf of the seller.Regards,

Re: American memorabilia
If you watch ami auctions, you will see that the number of bids is almost always even. It stays at zero till you bid, then immediately the system bids again to try and get you up to the reserve. This has happened every time I try to bid here. The only time you see an odd number of bids is when you are past the reserve in my opinion.
I have spoken to several consignors to ami who do respect the place, but it seems to run on cheap opening bids and high reserves. Many, many items move from one auction to the next at am. Still, there is some good stuff there! They are clear about their rules so I have no issue. Caveat emptier.
