    Another bad Pujols jersey?

The 2002 Pujols jersey offered by Historic Auctions seems to have two major problems.

First, the number on the front is HUGE. On 2002 Cardinals jerseys, the number starts 1" below the logo (about even with the button) and doesn't reach the button below. On this Pujols, the number extends beyond the bottom of that next button. Seems to be one of the older Cardinals uni numbers -- they switched to a smaller number (about 3 7/8" tall) a few years back, before 2002.

And second, there is WAY too much material on the name plate extending beyond the letters. On 2002 Cardinals jerseys, the plate extends beyond the letters about 5/16". It looks likes there's a good inch of material on both sides of "Pujols."

    These are red flags...

    jeff,

you don't even really need to look at a real pujols to see what a bad fake the historicauctions one is.
you're right; the number on the front is comically huge.

but there is a third major problem: if this "is one of the only home jerseys he used during the entire season of 2002" where is the darryl kile memorial patch? it's noticeably absent. maybe it just fell off?

who makes a fake pujols jersey and doesn't even get the right sized numbers? perhaps the folks at asi might know.

Here's an oldie but goodie that just popped up on eBay:

As you can see by this thread, we discussed this same jersey back in December. It was offered by Historic Auctions and came with an ASI LOA. Now it's being offered by ASI. Interesting.

        Jeff-
While on the subject of Pujols 2002 gamers, how about this one with reproduction patches!

          Howard-

What does "reproduction patches" mean? Does that mean fake versions of the team issued ones? How can you tell?

Also, if you think this jersey is questionable, if you haven't already, you should mention it to Steve Jensen at Vintage. He has always been receptive when I had a problem, and gave me a quick answer.

            Howard,

How do you distinguish the reproduction patches from the real ones? I can compare these patches with my 2002 jersey and see differences, but they're slight. I'm curious what you've been told to look for to distinguish the genuine patches from the fakes. Thanks!

The patches on the 2002 road Pujols in Vintage Authentics are not the reproductions that were available to the public. This is what the retail version of those patches looked like:

As you can see, they look very different than the pro version found on the jersey in the current Vintage auction.

                Rob/Forum readers-
Sorry for my incorrect information. I remembered that there were 2 versions of these patches, and incorrectly identified the Vinatge shirt as having "retail" patches, when in fact it does not. Rob, as always, a great job of providing a photo of what we should look for.

Again, sorry for the confusion and incorrect info on my part.

I can really see a difference between my authentic patches and those posted by Rob. Never knew the differences were so obvious. Thanks for the shots, Rob!

                    Everyone-

It is important to follow the rules of the forum. If you have questions about an item- before coming on here and yelling "fire" it is your responsibility to verify your information first.

That's the only way things can work around here.

                      Eric & Forum readers-
I purchased a few of the 2002 Cards jerseys from long-time Cardinal expert Jeff Sullivan (all commons with the two patches) and remember the patches as being of a different embroidery/stitching style than those on the Vintage Pujols. I do not have any of the 2002's any longer to compare them to.

Rob Steinmetz has shown us what the "retail" patches look like.

Jeff Sullivan-is it possible for you to comment on this or better yet, provide a photo of one of your 2002's with the patches for us to actually compare?

I'm in no way trying to taint or imply that the Vintage Pujols has a problem, only that the there may be a variation from what I have seen on other 2002 Cards patches. I am only trying to determine if there was a patch variation and get the facts on this.

                        Re: Another bad Pujols jersey?

I've handled 4 Pujols "patch" jerseys from 2002, as well as about 15-20 other stars and semi-stars. I see no difference between the patches on the Pujols in Vintage's auction and all the jerseys I have handled. Howard, can you specify what differences you are seeing in the patches on the common jerseys you have handled versus those on the Pujols in the current Vintage auction? Is it a font issue, a patch size issue, the way in which the patch is sewn to the jersey, etc.? I'm unaware of any variation in these patches aside from the obvious retail vs. pro variation I've already pointed out.
