Two of Walter Alston's former coaches die in 2 days time
Roy Hartsfield and Carroll Beringer, both members of HoF manager Walt Alston's Dodgers coaching staff from 1969-72, died on consecutive days.
Hartsfield passed away January 15 at age 85 due to complications from liver cancer. He played for the Boston Braves from 1950-52, then later became the first manager ever of the Toronto Blue Jays, skippering the team from 1977-79.
Beringer died at age 82 on January 17th. His total coaching stint uner Alston was from 1967-72, after which he left to join another former Dodgers coach, Danny Ozark, on Ozark's staff with the Phillies.
If these two men are too obscure for you...deal with it.

Dave,
I depend on your Obits man! You seem to know when everyone passes. Hell, I wake up every morning, sign onto GUU and look for a Dave Miedema Obit post. If my name isn't listed, I go to work

Re: Two of Walter Alston's former coaches die in 2 days time
I can't say I "enjoy" the obits, but I do read them all.
When I first heard of Harmon being sick with cancer, I started thinking about which players, to me, really defined my childhood. In other words, which obits are really going to hit me hard, and symbolize the passing of an era.
These are the baseball players I wish would live forever (top 5):
1. Harmon Killebrew
2. Frank Robinson
3. Brooks Robinson
4. Johnny Bench
5. Joe Morgan
And there are a thousand others.

Typical twist of words ( Enjoy ) that is used on here to often to infer a totally different meaning . Keep up the good work Dave , I would hope normal people would know what I was implying.

Dave,
You know you're loved here. I am currently reading some of your stuff from issues of Sports Collectors Digest from 1980. You were literally one of the first pioneers (if not the first) to try and educate collectors about uniform tagging, styles and availability.
I wish I could call up a few dealers and buy what they were selling at 1980 prices!!! Remember when flannel jerseys sold for less than the "new" knits? Crazy.....
