Dr J jersey in Grey Flannel?
I was wondering what people thought of the Dr. J 1986-87 jersey being offered in the current Grey Flannel auction. Here is a photo of
1986-87 Julius Erving Philadelphia 76ers Game-Used Away Jersey
Lot # 103
In all the photos I could find from that season, I couldn't find any where Julius Erving had the patch.
See the following- misdated, but apparently from 1987 at Los Angeles.
Can anyone provide a photo of Dr. J wearing a red sixers jersey with the nba logo?
Thanks
Eric

This is a photo from the May 1987 issue of HOOP. As you can see, it's not game action and the 6 is different. I'll do some more searching.

Found a game pic.
When the Sixers went to the larger font SIXERS (smaller font on the older Wilsons), Erving's number style changed a little too. The jersey that Eric posted a picture of has the older style 6 on the newer Sand-Knit jersey.

Re: Dr J jersey in Grey Flannel?
Sorry for all the posts. I'll attach a couple pics from some past auctions.
One is an 85-86 Wilson and the other is an 86-87 Sand-Knit. Notice the different size SIXERS and the different style 6.

Re: Dr J jersey in Grey Flannel?
I'm no jersey expert, I'm just very familiar with Erving jerseys because I collect Dr. J. memorabilia.
I'm not sure if the new Sand-Knit jerseys for the Sixers (86-87) came to the club blank or with numbers already sewn on. BTPH might be able to answer that question.
At first glance, it looks to me like a blank 86-87 Sand-Knit with the older Wilson jersey number 6 sewn on. Even if that's what it is, it doesn't prove if it's a true Doc gamer or not. That was his last season and everyone was aware of it. Every last visit to a road arena included some sort of farewell ceremony. He certainly could have gone thru a few road jerseys that year, although I don't see many of them up for bid.
Is this a homemade gamer? Is this simply an 86-87 Erving gamer which had the previous year's numbers sewn on.
One photo is worth a thousand guesses

Re: Dr J jersey in Grey Flannel?
Wouldn't you feel more comfortable with a Sedale Threatt? I collect jerseys of common players. It's a shame that we use old photos from auction catalogs as templates for legit gamers. The Dr. J in question, could be legit. However, it could as easily be a forgery. Where is the tear tag? I thought the Sand Knit crown tag came around in 1987. This jersey should have been made in the fall of 1986, for the 86-87 season ( I'm unsure of the crown tag). The wrong font on the "6" should be the red flag...but, there are always exceptions.
