With his victory today, Max Scherzer of Detroit joined Roger Clemens as the only MLB pitchers since 1919 to win 18 of their first 19 decisions.

With his save in last night's 9-6 Yankees victory over Boston, Mariano Rivera now has 118 saves since turning age 40. That's a massive total, but it's not the MLB record.

Hoyt Wilhelm, Hall of Fame hurler, had 129 saves from 1963-72. That's also not counting however many he notched in 1962 on or after his 40th birthday (July 26).

Last night, Astros' utility infielder, Jake Elmore, became only the fourteenth player in Major League history to pitch and catch in the same game.

In Monday's 11-1 thrashing of Washington, the Cubs scored one fewer run in that game than they had in their 8 previous home games, 5 of which were shutouts and one of which was a 7-0 victory.

Boston's 20-4 thrashing of the Tiger Wednesday night featured the following:

    a) David Ortiz smacked an RBI double for his 2000th hit. This was sandwiched between two home runs.

    b) The Red Sox hit the 20 mark in runs scored in a game for the first time since 2003, when they pasted Florida for 25 tallies.

    c) The 8 home runs the Bosox hit was last achieved by the team in 1977.

In Denver's 49-27 demolition of Baltimore Thursday night, Peyton Manning tied an NFL record with 7 TD passes. The last QB to do it: Joe Kapp of Minnesota in 1969.

    1 MLB, 1 NFL:

By completing a home sweep of the Dodgers, the Reds swept L.A. for the first time at home since 1992.

    Getting a jump on 2013:

Last season, the Dallas Cowboys had only 16 takeaways for the entire season. In 2013, after one game, they have SIX!

Monday was the 48th anniversary of the 1-0 perfect game hurled by Sandy Koufax of the Dodgers against the Cubs. Noteworthy in and of itself, it became the foundation of the longest current streak of its type in MLB. It was the last time the Cubs were no-hit, a streak now at 48 years.
