    Griffey Jr. Changes Uniform Number

Just read where the Cincinnati Reds announced that Ken Griffey Jr. will wear #3 during the upcoming season in honor of his three children.

He should wear #72 in honor of the total number of games he will appear in this season.

I thought I read somewhere that Griffey also donned #42 in 1997 in honor of Jackie Robinson. Is this possible since they retired Robinson's #42 that season? Rudy, any images that you can provide? BTW...Rudy's the man!

Boxers don't wear jerseys but it would be interesting to see what number Evander Holyfield would have worn.

I'm not sure but I don't think the 42 thing was that long ago.

    re: Griffey Jr.

Although it's difficult, if not impossible, to find any images of Griffey wearing #42, many online baseball resources, encyclopadias, etc
note that he wore both #24 and #42 in 1997. In the retiring of Jackie Robinson's #42 in 1997, the MLB said that anyone already wearing #42 could be grandfathered in, which is how Mo Vaughn got to keep the number for so many years. I'm guessing Griffey started wearing #42 early in the 1997 season, got grandfathered in, wore #42 for only a few games and then switched back to #24 relatively early on.

    Rudy.
