Surrey Cricketer Tom Maynard Dies at 23

    Tragic story -

LONDON (AP) Tom Maynard, a batsman with the English county cricket team Surrey, died Monday after being hit by an underground train. He was 23.

Surrey announced his death, but didn't disclose the cause of death. However, police said a 23-year-old man was pronounced dead by London Ambulance Service medics following an accident in an underground station in Wimbledon, south London.

Police said they tried to pull over a man fitting Maynard's description after a car was driving ''erratically'' in the area. The man made off on foot, and an hour later the man was found on the train tracks.

British Transport Police said the case is being treated as ''non-suspicious.''

Surrey chairman Richard Thompson described Maynard as a ''prodigiously talented young batsman who ... was clearly destined for far greater things.''

Maynard never played for England but was a member of the country's second-string Lions team. He joined Surrey from Glamorgan and scored his first century at county level in 2011.

''There is a profound sense of loss at the passing of Tom,'' Thompson said. ''To lose anybody at such a young age is an utterly senseless tragedy.''

Thanks for posting this; it's always interesting to read about non-US sports. How tragic.
