Haha I've been lurking around on this and many forums for a while, just thought I wasn't going to get into this one...

Noob question - all of the forum posts are effectively backwards for me - it's showing the newest at the top - how do I change that?

Go into User CP at the top left corner of any page.
You can change your settings there.

I should have explained a bit further.
When you click on user CP go to edit options on the left hand side.
You can set the page look, time, etc........
