Smith LS C271 1985
Need some help with this one. 1985 Louisville Slugger with "Smith" foil stamped on the barrel. All other markings are burned into the bat. Model C271. Has the number 5 written in marker on the end of the knob. Any idea which Smith ordered this bat? Thanks for any input.

Re: Smith LS C271 1985
Bill, it's tough to say. Since it simply says "Smith," it's logical to assume it's a pitcher, a rookie or a minor leaguer. The number 5 rules out most pitchers (not many single-digit pitcher uni numbers) and most rookies (they get higher numbers unless they're "can't miss" kind of guys).
It will take a bit of time, but you can go to Baseball Almanac, go down the list of Smiths to find the ones who played in 1985, then click on each to see what uniform numbers they wore. If your Smith was in the majors, you might find him that way. If he was in the minors, you may never know who used the bat. Here's the link to Baseball Almanac:

Hope that helps.

Jeff,
Thanks for the info and the link. Your site was very helpful to me in identifying the year of the bat. Could not find a Smith with uni # 5. I appreciate you taking the time to post your reply.
