Taped bats

Hi:
Do players sometimes use batting practice bats (taped bats) in actual games, once the tape has been removed?
I recently saw a Paul O'Neill bat on MLB auctions, which appeared to have tape on it at one point, but now removed, and there was evidence of pine tar.
Any ideas?
