    66 Cubs jersey help

(Already posted on Net54 & got some good info but nothing conclusive. A couple guys suggested going to GUU, which I've been meaning to join anyway so here I am. Apologies to those of you who follow both and hope you don't mind a post from a newbie.)

So, I'm very curious about this jersey I just picked up, which appears to be 1966 Chicago Cubs #18 (Glenn Beckert). It is heavily worn, a bit shrunk, rather soiled and has lots of loose stitching. Definitely not newly made and does not seem like a period souvenir jersey either. Here are pics - comments below ...

On the one hand it matches this '66 jersey http://jun08.hugginsandscott.com/cgi...?itemid=101112

On the other hand it does not match this '66 jersey, also a Beckert, both in tagging and a size http://www.legendaryauctions.com/Lot...entoryid=36207

At first I thought size couldn't be right for Beckert at 6'1" but then I saw an Ernie Banks jersey from the same era - also size 40 and he was almost as big as Beckert.

And a viewer on Net54 said the collar tagging was incorrect and from what I can see from other Cubs jerseys of the era he might be right.

Could this be a salesman's sample perhaps? Any information or insight from the group would be much appreciated.

Thumbs up Re: 66 Cubs jersey help

That collar tagging looks nothing like what I've seen in a few dozen Cubs game worn flannels over the years. If offered it, I would decline.

Thanks, guys, for the quick feedback. Do we think it's a salesman's sample? If so, then it would seem this one is too, though it would be unusual for a salesman's sample to have a number change, wouldn't it?

Even if my jersey is thumbs-down in the game-used department, I am curious to know what it actually _is_.

    Any theories?

    Re: 66 Cubs jersey help

I have a 1966 Wilson home shirt, and the tagging is very similar to yours, except the collar has the players name.

On my earlier Wilson home shirts, the year was stitched onto a piece of cloth which was then stitched under the tail Wilson tag, as in the first example you linked.

Interesting that the 3 examples we're looking at (your shirt, my Mincher, and the latest link you posted) that have the small tags attached that say "SET 2" and "66" are all set 2.

The stitching in the collar tag of my shirt looks like your shirt as well. The difference is, mine has the players name, which I would expect, while yours has a more generic type of labeling.

For what it's worth, my jersey is definitely old and worn, the Twins patch is stitched on just like my other Twins shirts, Mincher is basically a common, so less chance of forgery there, and it came with a LOA from Global Authentication, Inc. which was/is comprised of Dave Bushing, Dan Knoll, and Mike Baker.

I'm wondering... do I have reason to be concerned about my shirt as well, or is the issue with the Cubs shirt the size/number stitched in the collar instead of the name?

    Thanks,
    Mark

    Mark:

Your Mincher looks fine, at least from the photos. The Cubs, in the 1950s and 60s, used a numeric sequence in the collar for tagging. The NIC (Name In Collar) tag was the norm in the 1960s for Wilson Twins homes.

The collar tag doesnt match the jersey, (collar tag is much whiter)
