Question on a patch on GU Jersey "SET 2012"

I just got this Zobrist Jersey in the mail today. It is MLB authenticated to have been game used in the 2013 wildcard game and Game 1 of the ALDS

It has this patch on it that say "Set 2012". Does that mean this Jersey was originally issued in 2012? I didn't think they used uniforms that long unless it is just a left over. I tried to do a search on here for "set 2012" but I had no luck. I'm new to all this game used item world.

It's not common anymore, but it does happen on a few occasions. The tag is correct for 2012 Rays gamers.

It is very common for the Rays to carryover jerseys from previous years, I have had many in my collection, including star players.

I could tell from the photos of that jersey that it had been "in service" for a good amount of time. In my opinion, that amount of wear and use adds value to the jersey. That was a great pickup!

I would be more surprised if this was a jersey from a big market team, but the Rays and their budgetary constraints makes perfect sense to me.

Thanks for the replies! I have been looking at pics and videos on the web. It looks like this jersey was used in Mariano's last game in Yankee stadium as well at the 1 game playoff in Texas. Looks like it has been around. I have to check the Toronto footage. I am going to try my hand at photo matching in a couple a weeks when my coaching of Little League 6u and 8u is over.

Just to further expand on my statement, here are three examples:

Matt Moore Navy Blue MLB Auth on 5/25/13, "Set 2012" tag
Joe Maddon Road Gray MLB Auth in Sep 2012, "Set 2011" tag

The Rays wore the road alternate navy blue jerseys in 59 games this year, compared to wearing the road gray jerseys 28 times, so I would say they stretched them out more than ever this year.

I just got a Joel Peralta team issued 2013 post season light blue jersey. Is has an mlb authentication date of 10-11-13. It has a "set 2011" patch on the jersey. Interesting how some jerseys stay around for a while. I guess I could assume that it was used at some point in the 2011,2012 and 2013 season. The rays only use the light blue jersey at home on Sundays so it would not have received too much use each season.

Happens all the time with a jersey tagged for one year and not used until the following year. I have a J. verlander jersey MLB authenticated for 2010 and the strip tag says 2009.The jersey also has the EH patch for ernie harwell which was used in 2010 only. Like the teams say if the jersey is still good wear it.
