Post 1990's, not the 'dot code' but the 'clock dial'
how the hell do I read this damn thing??
someone please, dumb it down, and pretend you're talking to a 5th grader. im going grey here!

post 1980's? just in case.
two digits inside clock separated by arrow is the year (90). and the arrow points to the month (3)
so this current gonzalez helmet's shell was manufactured in March of 1990.Regards,

So would it be safe to say that helmets were used in the year they were made? Maybe in 91 for the example given?

Not necessarily. I believe I read somewhere that sometimes that it wasn't uncommon for a helmet to be issued 2 or 3 years later by the equipment manager from period of the clock dial. The clock dial was probably an internal (inhouse) gauge for productivity of the abc company at that time of production for the shells and nothing more. If abc overproduced and/or the team over-ordered that make sense to me that the actual start of usage could be after the year of the clock dial for many of the helmets.
