Thanks for the nice story "pwnasaurus." I went to the Pro Bowl in 2012 and when I was standing in line at the airport in Honolulu, I turned around and Drew Brees was standing right behind me in the line. One of his little boys was running all over the place and Drew was having to chase him around and bring him back. Pretty funny to watch.

Time for a change in the jersey theme so here is some Special Team love. A 1986 Brian Hansen game worn helmet.

1986 Brain Hansen - The Saints ninth round #237 draft pick in 1984 from Univ of Sioux Falls. Saints Punter from 1984 to 1988 and went to Pro Bowl in 1984. He played in the NFL from 1984 to 1999 also playing for the Pats, Browns, Jets, and Skins. I was able to photomatch the helmet to a Topps 1986 Sticker Set #120!

    Enjoy,

The helmet shell, clips, pads, and the facemask are all appropriately dated and original. The chin strap is not original though.

A little more love for the Saints Special Teams of the past.

Game used "K" ball from 2007 Week 17-2. The Saints played the Bears at Soldier Field and lost 33-25 as the last quarter was a disaster. The Saints had kicker Martin Gramatica and punter Steve Weatherford. Gramatica kicked 2 extra points and one field goal, while Weatherford punted 5 times.

The Bears Robbie Gould kicked 4 extra points and 1 field goal while Brad Maynard punted 6 times.

In honor of the Saints running game that showed up last night against the Eagles, here is a vintage RB helmet worn by Wayne Wilson up to 1986 but with a green dot NOP DW facemask instead. Wilson was drafted out of Shepherd College in WV by the Houston Oilers in 1979 in the 12th round pick #324. He went on to play RB for the Saints from 1979 to 1986 but was often the backup to Earl Campbell. He was the teams all-purpose yardage leader in 1982 and 1983 and set the team record for rushing with 160 yards on 34 carries on Oct 2, 1983. After leaving the Saints, he had a short stint with the Vikings before retiring in 1987 while a Redskin.

It appears that during the 1987 NFL strike replacement games, this helmet with it's current facemask, may have been worn by Vincent Alexander. He was an undrafted RB out of University of Southern Mississippi. From photo research, it seems like the Saints pretty much did away with the NOP DW facemasks for the running backs in 1987 in favor of the style of mask on the helmet now. Vincent only played one game for the Saints but reserves his place in history as noted in this link:

    http://bleacherreport.com/articles/2...in-nfl-history

The Strike team had several nicknames including the New Orleans Saint Elsewheres but played well and had a 2 - 1 record when the strike ended. The Saints finished with the second best record in the NFL at 12 -3, thanks in part to the replacement players that have all but been forgotten. The 49ers won the NFC West at 13-2.

I find the whole episode of the 1987 replacement players in NFL history to be an amazing part of the game and am very glad to have stumbled upon this helmet. Heck, without the Strike, Sean Payton would not have been QB for the Bears and may never have ended up coaching the Saints! How about that for a game changer.

    Enjoy,

OK, you all are probably getting tired of my posts but here are two Presentation Game Balls issued to DE/DT Joe Johnson. In 1994, the Saints used their first round draft pick (#13) for the defensive player out of Louisville and he played with the team until 2001. The Packers picked him up as a free agent in 2002 and he retired in Green Bay in 2003.

As a Saint, he went to the Pro Bowl in 1998 and again in 2000. He was the recipient of the Ed Block Courage Award, AP Comeback Player of the Year Award, and was named as an All Pro selection in 2000.

I'm not bored with it. If the posts are good stuff (and they generally are), by all means keep 'em coming.

Re: NO Saints Collectors Show Off Your Stuff!

Thanks for the nice words Dave Miedema.

In preparation for the Divisional Playoff Game, that few think the Saints can win, I present a "Bring the Wood" team bat issued during the 2009 season for the game against the New York Jets.

Both teams were 3 - 0 entering the game and Mark Sanchez was the highly touted rookie QB out of USC starting for the Jets. Mark had won 3 Rookie of the Week awards coming into the game, but his luck would not last as the Saints brought some major defensive wood.

At the start of the 2nd quarter, Sanchez threw a 99 yard pick six to Darren Sharper and just 5 minutes later, he was strip sacked in the end zone by Remi Ayodele for another defensive touchdown. By the end of the day, Mark had thrown 3 interceptions and the Jets had lost a fumble. The Saints sacked Sanchez 4 times and were well on their way to their first ever Super Bowl win!!!

Drew Brees did not throw any touchdowns but the Saints running attack accounted for 153 yards and the Saints won the game 24-10. I still remember watching this game and all I can say is that the Saints need to bring this same ferocity to Seattle tomorrow.

    Enjoy,
    Bob

Hey AK Saints. My brother caught a field goal attempt at the Saints-Bears game at Tiger stadium in 2007 and mistakenly gave the ball back. He would kill to get a ball from that game. The video of him is on youtube at

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uLmDjbdxoHk

would you consider parting with the ball? Tom

That is a great video Tom! I would be kicking myself too if I gave a ball back. The ball that I posted was actually from their game at Soldier field at the end of the year, so it is not a ball from the Tiger Stadium game. It is my only game used ball otherwise I would consider selling it. If I come across another one, I will let you know.
