Brian Downing Pants

I just picked up a pair of mid-70's Brian Downing pants from his days with the White Sox. On the inside of the waistband is "Downing 22." Did he ever wear #22 or is 22 indicative of something else? Also, any idea what specific year these are from?

Downing wore #5...the 22 is likely an inseam measurement. Remember, in that era just about everyone wore pants that came down to the upper calf, unlike now where most players wear pants that come down to their shoe tops. Based on the Wilson tag design and the uniform style, these were worn in either 1974 or 1975.

Dave - thanks for the info. Downing actually wore #16 in Chicago and switched to #5 with the Angels. Is there anyway to pinpoint the specific season these were worn in between 73, 74, or 75?

I don't think you can determine the year since someone cut out the year and set number. Right after the 22 inseam should be the year and set number. You can clearly see the rest of the tag has been cut off.

Thanks for the heads up. I see in your signature line you collect White Sox jerseys. Have you seen any White Sox Downing jerseys for sale lately?

Nothing lately, but I think MEARS sold this Downing jersey not too long ago. I don't think I've ever seen a 71 to 75 Downing jersey.

My goof...Downing wore 16 in Chicago, 5 with the Angels, and 55 with Texas.
