Bat Finish Question

Looking at a bat from the 1973-75 time period and it seems the bat finish has been worn off. Was this a common occurrence with bats from this era? Could it be from the player sanding it down or over use? Wanted to see if this is a red flag or something that has been seen before on this type of bat finish.

That bat likely saw extended use, given the finish loss and the different writing or numbers on the knob. It doesn't have the look of him sanding it, to me anyway.

The number markings on the knob and barrel also seem odd.
