Market flooded with Ortiz "9/23/13" Bats
This is such an odd thing. In the last 2 weeks the Ortiz market has had 5 (so far) Marucci bats stamp dated 9/23/13. 4 out of the 5 are signed the exact same way "Game Use David Ortiz 34". I haven't seen a single stamp date of this date since the end of the World Series in '13 and now they're everywhere. Any idea how/why this is happening? Was Papi sitting on all of these & is just now letting them get out? Just seems so odd. 3 were on Taube's site, 1 is in the upcoming Paragon auction, and one was on Ebay. I'll post all except the Paragon one, not my place.

Re: Market flooded with Ortiz "9/23/13" Bats
Not saying there is anything wrong with these specific bats, but in general, I stay away from any recent modern-era (last 2-3 years) bat without minimally being holo'd as team-issued OR definitively photomatched. Especially from bigger players (like Ortiz), if the original source isn't known... Most MLB teams are selling direct now and there are tons of photo/video of players at bat to reference.
To specifically address your question, I had heard that someone purchased a number of items direct from Ortiz earlier this season, possible these bats were among them? Dunno. Maybe one of the sellers would give you some vague idea of provenance to go along with the bat?

Re: Market flooded with Ortiz "9/23/13" Bats
The date 9-23-13 was the day after the Red Sox final regular-season game, won by Jackie Bradley's 3-run HR They had clinched the division title on 9-20, but were still battling for best record and playoff seeding with home-field advantage until 9-28. The Red Sox were idle on 9-23-13.
But it sounds like you still have to speculate about their provenance. A broken bat is usually mlb-authenticated at the game, but an unbroken bat usually wouldn't be unless it was a milestone.

MLB hologram EK881266 is a bat autographed by Ortiz on 9-22-13. It reads: BP # 34 Marucci DO 34 custom cut. I assume "BP" means a batting-practice item. But there was something going with with Ortiz and Marucci bats around that date.

Re: Market flooded with Ortiz "9/23/13" Bats
I was curious more generally rather than specific to this bat, but can someone explain the numbering in the bottom left and right of the knob? Also, what the second smaller number means above the larger number? Thanks in advance.
