People don't remember the hoopla over San Diego's signing of Garvey or that he was, possibly, headed to the Cubs prior to signing.
With the Grav's post career trials and tribulations, people also forget he was one of the clutch players of his era. Disappointed he and Dale Murphy never really gained HOF consideration. The Gil Hodges of his generation?

I remember what you've recalled here about the offseason of 1982-83. Garvey was hated by a lot of Cubs fans after he signed with the Padres...not so much because of the signing itself, but of the belief that he never seriously considered the Cubs, and used them just to drive up the price to play for a preferred SoCal ballclub.

Free agency was more predictable back then. Garvey's aspirations led to the fact he was going to sign on the west coast. Angels had no interest which left the Padres. One thing that hasn't changed though is how agents always seem to find that "other team" to start the "bidding war".
2106 Wil Myers blue & yellow home with a slash of brown. No more Fanatics so probably one of the last unwashed I will be able to pick up.
I will sell you dirty jerseys. Maybe not too many this year, but I will get you some for years to come.
