New eBay Policy on Bidder Names

For those who have been frustrated with Private auctions or having your bidders snaked out from under you, eBay's new Bidder system is now in effect whereby on an auction they will only be identified as Bidder 1, Bidder 2, etc. with appropriate feedback, bid history etc.

This is eBay's explanation: As the internet evolves, eBay continues to strike a balance between preserving transparency and protecting our Community of members. eBay has decided to change how bid history information is displayed so bad guys cannot target bidders with fake offers using this information. In certain cases, some bidders will no longer be able to view Bidder User IDs on the Bid History page. Your User ID will be shown only to you and the seller of the item you're bidding on. Other members will see an anonymous name, such as Bidder 1, applied consistently to the Bid History page.

Wouldn't that allow someone to have fake bidder on all their items easier???

Not sure what I think about that?

It has it's good points, but what I don't like is now I can't tell if someone is shill bidding. You can see patterns with sellers for who is bidding on their auctions. Now, that option is gone. I catch many sellers shill bidding. That I will miss with this new change.

You can view the bidders entire last 30 bid history now by category on all items to see any trends with the same seller, and you can see their bids of course on the same item.

Since you can see their feedback history you can tell if they are new to eBay too.

This should effectively eliminate the need for Private Auction which is good.

The only tough part is trying to see if shill bidding or unusual bidding is taking place.

Now remember, the seller can still see who the bidders are.

Yes, the seller can. But if the seller is shill bidding, they won't turn themselves in. I catch many shill bidding. I hate that I can't see that now. Ebay doesn't do that great of a job on their own.

eBay says you can still identify potential shill bids, but it is changing the mindset of following someones nickname to Bidder 5 for instance.

If you see Bidder #5 constantly pushing up bids and Bidder #5 has no Feedback and only bids on this sellers auctions then you have the Potential of the shill.

It will just take some getting used to as now in an instant you can get the last 30 stats on any bidder.

Here is my info on this Steiner auction and I am identified as Bidder #2 because I bid 2nd on this auction.

    http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...m=260074582848
    Bidder InformationBidder 2 Feedback:100 to 499 • 100% PositiveRegistered on eBay:More than 5 yearsBids on this item:130-Day SummaryTotal bids:8Items bid on:7Bid activity (%) with this seller:62%Bids to unique sellers:4Bids in unique categories:3Bid retractions:0View full bidding details

The bid activity stat with a particular seller may be a red flag for instance. In this case it shows that I have personally bid on 7 different Steiner auctions in the past 30 days.

    Two things...

I noticed that some ebay auctions now have the 'Bidder 1', 'Bidder 2' format in bid history, and others don't. ebay states specifically "In certain cases, some bidders will no longer be able to view Bidder User IDs on the Bid History page." Do we have any idea under what circumstance this will occur and under what circumstance it won't? Is it random? Is it something the seller must set as a default? Any ideas?

Also, does anyone else have a problem with "
so bad guys cannot target bidders with fake offers using this information."??? ebay starts their new disclaimer all professional, and they degrate to something from a Sci-Fi movie aimed at 12 year olds... Or is ebay now hiring kids out of high school to write their policy?

And, just who are these "bad guys?" Real, faking internet thieves, or the eBay member who has something similar to what you just missed out on, an offers to sell it to you, thus denying eBay their slice of the pie?
They certainly don't have much problem with all the purveyors of fake "game used" stuff out there!
"Gadgetsports", are your ears burning right now???
