I've had good luck with a pen called "Liquid Silver" by DecoColor. It's a broad line opaque paint marker. Whatever you do, avoid the silver Sharpie. It works well on some surfaces, but is terrible on a football.

Silver sharpies are very iffy. I used one and got an entire Cleveland Browns team signed football and it looks awesome. But sometimes you will purchase one and during the first sig it will go dead. That is why I always use paint pens now! There are 3 or 4 brands and they all work fine, but as birdbats stated Deco Liquid Silver is the best if you can find them.

The only silver marker I use is a metallic Sharpie paint pen. You can get them at Walmart for $4 and they come with a gold one too.
