LeRoy Butler Shoes Question

A friend of mine has a pair of Game Used shoes of Green Bay Packer's safety LeRoy Butler. My friend brought them to be signed, and tells this story.

LeRoy picked up the tongue of each shoe; looked deep inside and under the tongue and said "Wow, these are real too."

What the heck was he looking at under the tongue. I have subsequently looked under there and can not figure it out.
