Question about taped handles on older bats

I seen a few older game used bats that had taped handles. However, the tape was black and looked like electrical tape. Was that commonly used back then, or is it tape that looks like electical tape?

    Regards,

    Tony

    Tony,
Good question... I have wondered the same thing. I picked up a Bill White AD back in the early 90's and it has the old black "friction/electrical" tape applied. Will watch for other member comments.

Re: Question about taped handles on older bats

Tape as far as I am aware, was added by the individual players. They could have used anything. Now most likely it was standard cloth grip tape. It came in every color and was used on most wood non-pro bats. This tape has a super sticky, black rubbery base with a threaded cloth layer on top of it. It was about 3/4 to 1" wide. It might resemble electrical tape once the thin cloth as worn and heat has joined it with the adhesive. It leaves black tracks when removed.

You can still find this in sporting goods stores - it may be listed as hockey tape.
