McCovey's 500th HR Bat?
Was just wondering if anyone had happened to see this auction item in "Collect Auctions" current auction (ending April 7th)? McCovey apparently hit his 500th HR in 1978 on the road in Atlanta. The bat offered is a 1973-75 model (so noted in the auction description)....Would it be possible/plausible for McCovey to use a bat three years after production?
I'll have to check, but I thought there was something in one of the old Mike Montribands SCD "Gone Bats" articles about this bat (I'll have to pull them out and sift through them all)..Taube authenticated it but only to the extent of it being a McCovey gamer & didn't/couldn't state that it was THE bat....
Just curious as to what other people think or have stories of players using older model bats ....

Also worth mentioning that this auction has one of those 1990 Scoreboard Gregg Jefferies jersey's in it as well (lot #322).

The Cory Snyder jersey is also unlikely to be game used. The Indians wore Rawlings jerseys (home and road) from 1978-1991. The jersey being offered is a Wilson jersey.

I believe the Tribe DID use Wilson uniforms for the return to button fronts and prior to the Rawlings contracts on their 1985-86 road gamers.
While I couldn't find a shot of Snyder on Getty, I did find photos of Julio Franco and Andy Allanson from the back with the same vertically arched NOB and number font, and a Phil Niekro pic with a similarly styled front number. Plus, the "86" tag in the collar is an embroidery font match to other 1986 Wilson gamers.

Re: McCovey's 500th HR Bat?
I have to say the number of bats produced for MLB players back in the 70's were not the mega volumes players these days get. Additonally bats were heavier and longer and therefore lasted longer. That said it would be very plausible that a player used a bat from previous time era during the 70's verses nowadays.

I wish I had saved those all SCD mags. Great reading then and the prices were amazing.
