Re: Stephen Strasburg Baseball Card 1-1 $38,200

This auction has become a joke but for those that still believe all bids are real, this card is getting plenty of publicity on the news.

    Isn't all publicity good?

I guess this one has to be canceled. It was fun to watch, but it looks like the party's over.
The bid history has a lot of retracted bids. My guess is the winning bidder won't pay and will only get a non-paying strike.

Since eBay buyers can't get negatives, the seller should bring a lawsuit against the winning bidder for damages (which rarely happens).

If I did my math right...

    12% of the first $50, $6
    6% of the next $950, $57
    2% of the final $999,000, $19,980

Total Final Value Fee on $1mil - $20,043.00

    ouch!

This is not a defense of spoof bidding, but when you list a $200 item with a Buy It Now price of $50K, you invite this kind of abuse.

And of course once the item gets any kind of media attention, you're sunk.

At least the listing fee would have been cheap

So... let's say hypothetically the item sells, but the high bidder does not pay. The seller's credit card gets hit for $20K, and he needs to go through the "non-paying bidder" process to recoop his fees.

Another thought is how many people have linked a credit card to ebay that has a limit of $20K or higher?

$50 is the final value fee. They implemented a new policy in like April or May where the FVF is capped at $50 I think.

Somebody can double-check, but I'm pretty sure that's the case.

skinsfan is right I just double-checked... They capped auctions at $50. The fee I posted earlier would be for a fixed price listing.

Here's an example of a final value fee calculation for an auction-style listing:
    1. You sell an item for $100.00.
    2. Your final value fee is 9% of the final sale price, which is $9.00.
The maximum final value fee for auction-style listings is $50. For example, if you sell an item for $1,000, you’ll pay only $50, even though 9% of $1,000 is $90.
