Kirk Gibson 1988 World Series HR bat, jersey, helmet
Many of you know that Kirk Gibson auctioned off the bat, jersey, helmet, and maybe a few other items used to hit his '88 World Series walk off HR. I was informed by a source close to Gibson some of the reasons he auctioned these items and I thought the forum might be interested. Reasons mentioned included:
-He was sick of paying $5000 a year for insurance on the bat.
-To raise money to donate.
-He said he really didn't care about any of his Dodgers items(except his ring), but also said that he would NEVER sell any of his Tigers items.
As a Tigers fan that last one makes me smile. Even though he was from Michigan, went to college at MSU, and then won a WS with his hometown Tigers, I still found it interesting that he cherished his Tigers items over the ones related to one of the most famous HR's in baseball history.
