Default Bats branded at the factory with the wrong model number?

I have a Bill Madlock gamer from 77-79. I'm sure that its legit. Everything is perfect and inline with what should be except the model number. The model number is C253. Louisville Slugger records say that he used C235 and C263.

A LS rep said that "I guess the brander that day transposed the numbers".

Anyone ever heard of that happening before?

I know of a Lou Brock bat branded C171 from the 1973-75 era. Brock never ordered a C171, but he did order C271 bats in 1974 (I have one). The bat marked C171 looks identical to my C271 when they're placed next to one another. I'm convinced the C171 was supposed to be marked C271, but a mistake was made.

I also have a commemorative Dizzy Dean bat, one of 25 made back in 1993. It is a B73 model -- but the "3" is flipped, so it looks more like B7E.

Default Bats from the H&B factory with the no model number too.

I've seen a professional bats from the 1960s with the model number completely left off.

Quality control doesn't catch everything, and the bats are shipped with the orders.

Hi Jim --

I have viewed the stamping process at the Louisville Slugger factory, and agree that a transposition of numbers as suggested by the H & B person you spoke with is a possibility. I also have had that experience with a Carew F147 gamer that was originally stamped T147, then the error was caught before shipping apparently and the bottom arm of the F was added as an overstamp. I may have been a little skeptical, but I matched the bat to another F147 and it was definirely a F147, and the source was an Angels exec.

Great info from everyone, thanks! I have no doubt that this is a real gamer from the 4 time batting champ and I dont have any plans to sell it anytime soon but its good to have all the info just in case. Thanks again!

Jim
