Re: Clemente jerseys in recent auctions
Actually this could be a style match to the front so maybe MacGregor did produce a home set in 1958. Not sure about the numerals though.

Re: Clemente jerseys in recent auctions
Yes they have all been the white version and I don't think any have had the set tags intact and I don't recall any photo matches presented, only style matches. I'd be a lot more interested in a road version with set tag though that doesn't mean the jerseys haven't been legit. On another note I don't think you want to spend $50K on this one on ebay:
I could always be wrong but I don't think MacGregor ever made the home flannels, if so it would be mid-to-late 50s. I also don't think they ever had vests that didn't button all the way down or the single-tone numerals with that style. But, I haven't put a lot of time into researching that era.Leave a comment:

Here's a clearer color shot of Clemente in the grey away jersey:

Re: Clemente jerseys in recent auctions
That translates to probably 25 games, they wore white at home primarily and split between gold and black when away, so an estimate would be it was worn 6 games assuming that it's the only gold jersey Stargell was issued that year. That is the definition of "light use" vs game issued. I think he probably wore it.Leave a comment:

Turns out that photo of Clemente in the GF catalog is from the 1971 World Series. The Pirates were wearing gray jerseys. They weren't a dark shade of gray though and it's hard to tell the difference from the home in old photos and video besides the sleeve and waistband stripes.
The Stargell jersey in GF looks almost game issued to me. He only made 85 plate appearances that year.Leave a comment:

Re: Clemente jerseys in recent auctions
If you look at the style-match photo in the GF auction, it's actually an away gray jersey. You can tell by the slightly different shade of the main body of the jersey from the stripe on the sleeve (which was white, even on the away jerseys). Same with the waistband stripes, that was white even on the away jerseys. And, you can see by the graphic on the outfield fence in the background that it's not a photo from Three Rivers Stadium. This doesn't mean there's anything wrong with that Clemente jersey at auction because they are not claiming a photomatch from that picture, just shows that the Pirates wore gray jerseys away from Three Rivers.

Re: Clemente jerseys in recent auctions
Seems like there has been a Stargell jersey in every auction of late as well. I think there's an '82 Pops jersey in the current Grey Flannel auction.
I wish I had $targell money to afford one at this time!
Originally posted by geniusSeems like every auction lately includes a Clemente jersey. The early 70's knits seem especially frequent and are mostly home jerseys. There should only have been 6 home Clemente knit jerseys in total assuming each season had just set 1 and set 2.
Can these all possibly be good? Maybe the same ones just keep popping up over and over again.
The flannel at Mears went for over $90K, that one looked solid but wow a heckuva price tag.
I have no issues with any of the Clemente jerseys that have appeared lately, but I'm surprised that it's not a rare opportunity to purchase one.Leave a comment:

I could be wrong, but I believe the first few years they wore the knits, they only wore the white ones, no grey. For example, when they won the World Series in Baltimore, they were wearing white. My first distinct memory of the grey knits for away games was during 1973.Leave a comment:
