Hector Lopez was a left fielder and third baseman who played for the Kansas City Athletics and New York Yankees from 1955 to 1966. He played in five World Series, and was on World Championship teams for the Yankees in 1961 and 1962. Lopez was a productive hitter who in various seasons finished among the top 10 American League hitters in hits, runs batted in, runs scored, doubles, triples, slugging percentage, sacrifice flies, sacrifice hits, games played, times hit by pitch and at bats. Lopez had his most successful season in 1959, hitting 22 home runs, batting in 93 runs, and hitting .283. The utility player divided his career almost equally between infield and outfield positions.
This 34½ inch, 32 ounce block letter Hector Lopez bat was manufactured by Hillerich & Bradsby during the 1950 to 1960 labeling period, however is specifically dated to Lopez' 1959 and 1960 seasons with the New York Yankees, based on the vintage number 11 which is on the knob of the bat – his number with the Yanks. This bat has taken on a rich patina common to bats of the period. The bat is a model M110, first ordered by Lopez in 1956, and documented in his personal H & B records throughout 1959 and 1960. The bat has a crack on the handle approximately 8 inches long -- the nondisplaced wood has been repaired with vintage tape. Checking is present on the back of the barrel, and a very small chip appears on the knob.
This is an opportunity to own a bat specific to the powerful Yankee teams of the late 1950s and early 1960s, and possibly used during the 1960 AL Championship season. A LOA from SCD Authentic (D.Bushing / T. Kinunen) is provided which grades this bat A5.5 based on the deadwood (checking) present on the barrel and the small chip on the knob, features that evidence the large amount of game use this bat has seen.
