Andre Thornton 1980-1983 Signed H & B Game Used Bat

André "Thunder" Thornton was a first baseman and designated hitter who played for the Chicago Cubs, Montreal Expos, and Cleveland Indians during a 14-year career in Major League Baseball. André finished his career with 244 doubles, 253 home runs, a batting average of .254, an on-base percentage of .360, and a slugging percentage of .452. For three seasons, he was in the top 5 in home runs in his league, and he was in his league's top 5 in walks four times. Thornton finished his career with more bases on balls (876) than strikeouts (851). During his 11 seasons with the Indians, this two-time All Star led the Tribe in home runs seven times.

This rich hickory finished bat was manufactured by Hillerich & Bradsby and contains labeling consistent with the 1980-1983 labeling period. This bat can be specifically dated to the years 1981 through 1983, as Thornton missed the entire 1980 season and most of the 1981 season with injuries. This bat is a model S219 and measures 35 inches in length and weighs approximately 34 ounces. Hit marks and ball marks are found in abundance on the barrel, as is an area of slight grain separation at the rear of the barrel. A non-displaced crack is present on the handle of this bat, approximately 10.5 inched from the flared knob, and extending approximately 3 inches toward the knob and the center label. There is no significant effect on the display quality of this bat.

Thornton has signed this bat in silver marker below the barrel label. Measuring nearly 2.5 inches, the signature is clear and unhurried. This is an exceptionally strong example of an Andre Thornton game used bat, used during a period when he hit over 50 homers and had 223 RBIs for the Cleveland Indians, and would most certainly become the Tribe's career home run leader if not for injuries in 1980 and 1981.View Lot Detail page
