George Herman Ruth, Jr., also known as "Babe", "The Bambino", "The Sultan of Swat", "The King of Crash", "The Titan of Terror" and "The Colossus of Clout", was an American Major League baseball player from 1914-1935. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest baseball players in history – if not the greatest. His records are numerous and in 1969, he was named baseball's Greatest Player Ever in a ballot commemorating the 100th anniversary of professional baseball. In 1998, The Sporting News ranked Ruth Number 1 on the list of "Baseball's 100 Greatest Players." The next year, baseball fans named Ruth to the Major League Baseball All-Century Team. In a 1999 ESPN poll, he was ranked as the third greatest US athlete of the century, behind Michael Jordan and Muhammad Ali. What else can you say about the Babe!
This Babe Ruth 40 B.R. model bat is representative of bats made for retail sale by Hillerich & Bradsby in the 1920s and 1930s. Based on the specifications of bats used by star players of the period who endorsed the company's products, these bats were purchased and used by various athletic teams as well as the public. There is no documented evidence of use in the Major Leagues of this model. The key to store model bats of this period is condition. Here is an excellent example of The Bambino's model that has been used, but not abused in any way. Evidence of use is present on the barrel, and a small area of checking exists on the back of the barrel, almost impossible to find. Otherwise, this uncracked example boasts a rich brown patina to the finish that is highlighted by deep branding of the labels. Labeling, including the "Bone Rubbed" logo to the right of the centerbrand, suggests manufacture in the late 1920s to early 1930s, specific to Ruth's career.
