Bobby Murcer 1971-1974 Adirondack Game Used Bat

Always a fan favorite wherever he played, but especially in New York with the Yankees, Murcer averaged 21 home runs, 89 RBIs, and a .277 average over a full season during his career. A left-handed hitter, Murcer ended with 252 home runs, 1,043 RBIs, and a .277 average. He hit .301 with runners on third base. Murcer made the All-Star teams in 1971-74 in the American League and 1975 in the National League. He also won a Gold Glove Award in 1972. He played primarily center field and right field, though he also appeared in left field and at third base and shortstop. In Yankees lore, he will always be remembered for "The Munson Game". After giving one of the eulogies at catcher Thurman Munson's funeral on Aug. 6, 1979, in Ohio, the team flew home to play the first-place Baltimore Orioles on national television. Yankee manager Billy Martin wanted to give Murcer the day off, but Murcer insisted on playing — and play he did. Murcer single handedly won the game, bringing the Yankees back from a 4-0 deficit with a 3-run homer in the 7th, then hit a walk-off 2-run single down the left-field line in the bottom of the 9th, causing Howard Cosell to exclaim what a heroic performance Murcer had put on for the deceased Yankee captain Munson, who had died in a plane crash 4 days earlier. Murcer never used the bat from the game ever again and gave it to Munson's widow, Diane. That bat was auctioned off a few years ago. Murcer is now a Yankees broadcaster.
The bat offered is a 1971 - 1979 Adirondack Model 301A Bobby Murcer Game Used Professional Model Bat. The bat has a blue ring on the upper handle which dates it to the 1971 - 1974 period when he was with the Yankees. There is also a vintage faded number 1 on the knob, which was Bobby's uniform number with the Yankees during the 1971 - 1974 time period. The bat measures 35-½" in length and weighs 34.6 ounces. The bat has a crack in the handle that has been repaired and lays flat. At the upper portion of the crack, a portion of the blue ring is missing from the crack. The bat's handle has perfect heavy tar markings on it for Murcer and is void of any tar between the lower and upper handles. The gap is evidence of Murcer's taped sponge pad he used as a thumb guard which is now missing from the bat. The bat shows moderate to heavy use with numerous ball and cleat marks on the barrel. The Barrel is embossed with BOBBY MURCER in block letters, as Murcer had a endorsement contact with Louisville Slugger throughout his entire career. The bat is a great example of a Murcer game used bat from his first tenure with the New York Yankees.
