Willie Stargell was signed by the Pittsburgh Pirates at age 18, and made his Major League debut at the end of the 1962 season. He soon became a standout player, making his first of 7 trips to the All-Star Game in 1964. He played his entire 21-year career with the Bucs. Beloved for his style of play and affable manner, Stargell was known for hitting monstrous home runs, including 7 of the 16 balls ever hit completely out of Forbes Field and several of the upper-tier home runs at its successor, Three Rivers Stadium. At one time, Stargell held the record for the longest homer in nearly half of the National League parks. Stargell was the unquestioned leader of the Pirates following the 1972 death of Roberto Clemente, both on and off the field. He was one of the most dominant players in the National League throughout the 1970s as he not only won the MVP award in 1979, but also finished second in the MVP balloting in 1971 and 1973, and third in 1972. He was a member of the Pirates World Championship teams in 1971 and 1979, and was elected to the national Baseball Hall of Fame in his first year of eligibility, 1988. He was described by baseball writer Roger Angell as "the most admired and admirable player of his time." Over his 21-year career with the Pirates, he batted .282, with 2,232 hits, 423 doubles, 475 home runs and 1540 runs batted in, helping his team capture six National League East division titles, two National League pennants and two World Series.
