Re: Jays fans...who wore #48 in 1988?
I've got your answer:
According to my 1988 Grapefruit League roster, #48 was issued to a rhp named Colin McLaughlin, who spent the season (many seasons, actually) in AAA Syracuse and never made it to The Show.
A partial history, if you're interested. Strangely his '87 stats aren't listed, though he was in Syracuse that year as well.

Re: Jays fans...who wore #48 in 1988?
Not all of the coaching staff get listed. For example, I have a #39 game used Rich Donnelly jersey from 2009 TBTC game, but Baseball Reference and Baseball Almanac don't list him. An instructor or roving coach often get a jersey...especially in spring training.Leave a comment:

Don't think it was a coaches jersey. Here is the list of coaches in 1988:
Manager Coaches- 54 Galen Cisco (pitching)
- 43 Cito Gaston (hitting)
- 24 John McLaren (third base)
- 42 Billy Smith (first base)
- 8 John Sullivan (bullpen)

It is also worth mentioning that sometimes a bench coach, special assistant, etc won't make listings like the Baseball Almanac. It could very likely have been a coach.Leave a comment:

Re: Jays fans...who wore #48 in 1988?
Thanks everyone.
I have a Tony Fernandez, 1988 powder blue gamer - with Jays LOA as well as this new 1988 jersey. The are identical (save the numbering and size). I believe this is a big club jersey that was readied for a pitcher that didn't make the team in 1988 or was to be called up.
I don't believe it is a minors jersey.Leave a comment:

I know for a fact the Jays did NOT have names on the back in 1988. My guess is this is a minors used jersey.Leave a comment:

Re: Jays fans...who wore #48 in 1988?
I'm not a Jays expert by any stretch of the imagination. That having been said, due to the placement height of the rear numbers in relation to the neckline, my gut reaction is that it's a farm club jersey.
If anyone knows with certainty that names were worn on Jays road jerseys in '88, that would also be helpful (but not definitive as it still could be GI), as it doesn't appear that this jersey shows evidence of letters or a nameplate having been removed.Leave a comment:

Maybe a spring training Jersey? Maybe a last minute call up? Or possibly just a Game Issued.Leave a comment:

Re: Jays fans...who wore #48 in 1988?
I researched Baseball-almanac and wiki numbers. I cannot find #48 being worn by any player or coach after 1985 before the 1990 season. Is there any evidence of a number change? Or possible could it have been worn in 1985 and then tagged for 1988 as a backup/call-up jersey that never occured?Leave a comment:

Re: Jays fans...who wore #48 in 1988?
Jack Looney's book shows nobody wearing #48 in 1988. Luis Leal wore it in 1985; John Candelaria wore it in 1990; but nobody in betwen 1985 and 1990.Leave a comment:
