    Mike,

Here's a photomatch for you, plus a partial answer to what's in my collection.

    Thanks, R.J.

When Bob from Steiner let me know about this BP jersey I just had to have it.

Be curious to know what other Mattingly items you have. If you have any. I'm assuming you do.

Besides this BP jersey. I have a GU Mattingly 1990 Road jersey, 3 GU bats and 2 pairs of GU batting gloves (one of the pairs photo matched).

    Take care,

Too hard to tell, but it would be sweet if your jersey was the one in his Donruss rookie card

    Hi Howard,

Here's the note from Bob Malandro and the information that his team at Steiner came up with to determine this was indeed from 1983.

This BP jerseys the Yankees wore the “Roman Sport” jerseys were manufactured in 1983 and ONLY 1983, which Mattingly wore #46.

There are also pictures on Getty Images of Ron Guidry wearing this type of jersey in 1983. Also, I picked up a 1984 NY Yankees yearbook (Ebay) showing players in 1983 gear.

The Roman Sport jersey is unique in style because it had the following features:
    • Oval “mesh”
    • Banded V-neck collar (which often ran tight on players, and they cut)
    • Banded sleeves
There are no other Yankee BP jerseys that have these features.

Bob also collaborated with someone who is going to be publishing a definitive catalog on Yankees jersey styles, and the 1983 Roman Sport BPs are included as part of the publication.

    I hope this helps.

    Thanks,

    MAP-

Help me understand how this can definitively be identified as a Mattingly rookie jersey, let alone specifically to the 1983 season, the only season uniform number 46 was issued to Mattingly?

The Yankees wore this exact style of pullover for many years. Likewise, year tags were not used, nor were sleeve patches that would allow it to be traced to a specific season.

    #46 history:
    1980-Joe Lefebvre
    1981-Gene Nelson
    1982-Joe Pepitone
    1983-Don Mattingly
    1984-Mike Pagliarulo
    1985-Henry Cotto
    1986-Henry Cotto

Any insight as to how Steiner or you have determined this is definitely Mattingly's rookie gamer is appreciated.

Recent Pick up - 1983 Mattingly BP Jersey

    Hello GUU Members,
Thanks to Bob Malandro at Steiner I was able to pick up this early career Don Mattingly #46 Game Used BP Jersey. I think a very rare and really cool item. Thought I'd show pics of it.

    Thanks,
