Having played for the Cardinals, Mets and Indians, Keith Hernandez was one of the most consistent hitters and fielders of his era. A National League All-Star five times, Keith also captured MVP honors in 1979 while playing for the Cardinals. That same year, he won his first and only batting title. In 1980 and 1984, he won Silver Slugger Awards, while capturing Gold Gold Awards every single season from 1978 through 1988.
This is a Keith Hernandez game-used professional model baseball bat manufactured by the Hillerich & Bradsby Company. It is a signature model bat with Hernandez' name stamped in script on the barrel as he had an endorsement contract with the company at the time of manufacture. This bat has what is commonly referred to as 1980-83 era labeling, however is specific to the period between 3/8/82 and 4/13/83 -- his final year-and-a-half with the Cards before being traded to the New York Mets. The Model Number M159 is stamped into barrel of this bat. The bat has a natural, or regular, finish. It measures 35 inches in length and currently weighs approximately 32 ounces. A review of Hernandez' H & B personal factory records shows multiple orders matching this bat shipped to Hernandez during the 1982/83 period noted above.
The knob and barrel end of this bat contain the number 37 in vintage black marker, Hernendez' uniform number with the Cards. Also present on the knob is the nickname "Mex," again in vintage marker. This bat exhibits a significant number of game use characteristics, including hit marks, ball marks, pine tar residue, and rack marks. This bat has a handle crack beginning approximately 7 inches from the knob and extending approximately 8 inches toward the barrel. A small piece is missing (approximately 3/4 inch) as seen in the photo. The wood is slightly displaced in that area. This bat displays very well and represents an opportunity to obtain a great bat from an important member of the 1982 World Champion St. Louis Cardinals and the 1986 World Champion New York Mets.
