Why is Randy Johnson working in a Quik-e-mart selling cigarettes and lottery tickets to little kids?

They weren't hiring at Peter Piper Pizza?

It was early in '01, as I recall. They were selling $1 scratcher tickets with Randy's picture on them, for charity, so he went there for an hour one morning to promote it. He'd sign any one item if you just bought at least one of the scratcher tickets.

The appearance, itself, was very badly publicized - I just heard about it on the radio on my way to work, went back home to get my son's souvenir batting helmet and a gold paint pen, and went to the store. As I say, it was badly publicized - I don't think there were more than sixty or seventy people there.

Randy signed the batting helmet with the paint pen, which was (naturally) just running dry, and you could barely see it. Fortunately, I had a backup pen, and asked him to do it again, which he grumped about for a few seconds (again, naturally), but he did it. In fact, he wrote out his whole name the second time, probably in an unconscious attempt to obliterate the earlier effort, so it's actually one of the most complete RJ autographs I've ever seen. Then I waited, with a few others, for him to come out, and managed (probably because the media was still around) to get him to sign the cover of the '01 DBacks media guide, which features a photo of him holding some of his Cy Young awards.

He was still wearing that Circle-K jacket when he left the store, and I thought about asking Randy if he'd sell it to me for charity, but I chickened out.
