Re: Buster Posey on DL with broken bone

Like others have said, it is a split second decision. The runner needs to expect the catcher to be blocking the plate. When the runner makes that split second decision, his brain switches his focus to hit the catcher in the glove to dislodge the ball. Tunnel vision will set in and you do not even look to reach for home plate it until after the collision.

In looking at the pictures posted, the only reason Posey was not blocking the plate is the dropped throw. If it was a clean catch, Posey would simply complete his turn and slide over to protect the plate. Posey or any decent catcher can pull this move off in that less than a second time.

I'm not going to get into any argument on who is right or wrong, just pointing out some of the baseball 101 issues. Remember, this all happened in about a second! It is a very unfortunate situation and a freak accident...it looks as it Posey was off balance when he was hit (likely due to the dropped throw) and that put him in a bad position to be hit. Hopefully he will make a complete and quick recovery.

Schubert.....I understand how you feel about Posey as he's well liked and a good player. He's young and will bounce back from his injury and will be on the field in no time.

    Best Regards,

    Bobby,

I didn't think the play was dirty, but saying Posey was blocking the plate is a bit of a stretch.

No matter what path the runner had to the plate, open or blocked, Posey still could tag the runner out. Posey was in the way of the run being scored.
Cousins was attempting to score the winning run and gave himself the best chance to do so.

My Posey HOF post was intended as a joke, much like your opinion of how to block home plate.

I notice your a bit new on the forum so I don't expect you to know much of anything. You're forgiven.

Imo , he is blocking the plate. Is he completely blocking his path , no . But he is in the act of blocking the plate , and had Buster caught the ball he would have slid over and taken any open lane the runner had .

In this last photo , yes the runner is throwing his body into Posey , assuming he caught the ball ( there is no way he sees the ball is dropped and like I said before , his instincts had him knocking the ball loose and there is no way he can pull up or change his path at this point ) but Posey did turn to block / apply the tag even though he dropped the ball . Had the runner slid to the outside I think Posey still would have spun around to tag him , even though he dropped the ball... and imo had he held on ... he would have had plenty of time to tag a runner had he chose to slid to the outside.

    Btw
At least 10 years ago ...probably 15 ... I had the same thing , kind of , happen to me , except I had zero intention of hitting the catcher and started to dive for the corner of the plate which I thought was wide open . The catcher snared the high throw and lunged at me ... and before I could get fully extended I plowed him over busting up his lip and nose. So even though it looked really bad to those watching , sometimes things happen so fast that there really is no one at fault .

I'm done with this thread. No reason for name calling and hurt feelings.

    You win! Feel better?

    To the board,
Sorry I got my dander up. It was wrong of me to respond the way I did to his attack.

Unless of course you believe the runner is as thin as a line drawn on a computer screen.
