    MLB Authentication

    Hello Forum members:
I have an autographed game used Miguel Cabrera Florida Marlins batting helmet. I received it in 2004. It came directly from the Marlins, with an LOA on their color letterhead, and signed attesting to its authenticity by the chief legal Counsel for the Marlins. Inside the helmet there is the MLB hologram and the prefix for the hologram is DB. However, when I go the the MLB website to enter the hologram number to see if it has been entered into the system there is no prefix for DB. There are multiple other prefix's all beginning with a letter(s) but no DB. Any one have an explanation for this? I emailed MLB Authentication posing this question tonight and am waiting for a reply.
    Thanks,
    Howard

Is it a large circular hologram? If so, then it's most likely an "Official Merchandise" hologram.

Thanks for the reply however am unsure as to what you mean by "Official Merchandise"? It implies that it is not game used? However the Marlins Cabrera helmet that I received from the Marlins was actually part of a legal settlement between the Marlins and myself, the details of which I will cannot go into, so I know the authenticity of this piece is rock solid. So I am somehat skeptical as to "Official Merchandise" although greatly appreciative of the time you took to reply to my question.

        Re: MLB Authentication

With the MLB hologram, I understand they are backlogged in entering the game used into their system. I got an Eric Byrnes autographed baseball from the Diamondbacks website auction a while ago and it wasnt entered into the system until a few months later. Depending when you got your helmet, (am not sure when you said or if you said when you got it), then it might be a while until they change their website and add in the new code DB.

Exactly what he said. Those large circular holograms are for "official MLB merchandise" like pictures, figurines, etc. It doesn't mean that it's not game used, it's was just on there when the helmet was issued to the player. I don't believe there is any difference with ML helmets and retail helmets

I too have noticed the "DB" prefix is not available in the system..I have helmets from the Indians & Reds w/MLB authentication holograms, but can't match them up as of yet..the helmets I have are from 2004-present. Jay

The hologram I have is the one on the right that TFig27 posted. Interesting what pietraynor wrote in that he has helmets from Indians and Reds (Game used I presume?) also from 2004 with the same DB prefix. As my Cabrera is from 2004 and has the same DB prefix. I also believe that 2004 was the first year MLB authenticated items through Deloitte and Touche. Perhaps the bugs were not worked out of the system yet? I did send an email to MLB and am awaiting a response. On a side note, in addition to the game used Cabrera helmet I also received a game issued Cabrera auto bat which has the MLB hologram and its number is in the MLB authentication system. I should have known that if Bud Selig is involved somehow things turn out to be a mess. Good thing I have the LOA from the Marlins signed by the Marlins attorney. If you can't trust an attorney...... Thanks to everyone who contributed an answer to my question. You are all very knowledgeable. Thanks again.

If it's the one on the right like your said, then it is definitly an "official merchandise" hologram. You can't look up the numbers, since that is only for something that is authenticated. I have always seen these stickers on the more recent helmets.

I used paint. btw-I'd have to pass on the Chipper, I don't really like those cards that have a lot of people pictured. But thank you though very much for your generous offer
