is it assumed that all the bats tony ordered were used by him? i see alot of bats that fall in the catagory of misc and promo that are being sold as game used.

i wouldn't want to buy a bat thinking it is used and come to find out it is not. bats in question are model B267 and C263. will someone please shed some light on this? thank you.

Tony Gwynn was a big-time user of a variety of bats---- he would try out bats from multiple manufacturers in multiple models, throughout his career. With respect to H & B, Gwynn documented bats number approximately 200 per year from 1987 through 2001, with another 350 or so documented during his first 6 seasons. Standards for determining whether the bats were ordered for personal game use are the same as for all players---if the bat appears in Gwynn's personal H & B records and is invoiced to either BB Promotions or BB Miscellaneous, but is ordered with in a specified model with a specified length and weight, then it is presumed to have been ordered for Gwynn's personal professional use. If the order is missing any of those elements (say, the model ordered is 'Any," or the weight is listed as 0.0 oz), then the bat is presumed to have been ordered for some promotional purpose and not for the player's personal professional game use.


Fortunately, the majority Gwynn GU bats are of dimensions that are not commonly used by many professional players, ranging between 31.5 and 33.5 inches in length. He has several personal characteristics that are useful in identifying GU bats as well, including commonly seen notations on the knob and in the barrel cup, a specific and defined "Gwynn hitting area" below the barrel label approximately 6 inches wide, and, if lucky, some coloring and or doodling on his bats (more rare, but cool to find.)

H & B Models B267C and B267 are commonly seen between 1983-86 and B267C between 1993-2001. It is not a rare Gwynn model. C263C is another very common Gwynn model, often seen between 1986-1996.
