My collection starts (in earnest, anyway) in 1989. I don't have enough Orioles stuff of this vintage to add much to this conversation. I know somebody who does, but I'm not sure he's on this forum.

From my recollection Rawlings did not start adding there name to the sleeves of the jerseys until 1987, maybe 1989, but definitely not in the early 1980's.

Joel is right; the "Rawlings" logo did not appear on the sleeves until 1987 (the first year they had a contract with MLB).

            Hi Guys,

I don't post much on here but I am a big Orioles fan and think I can help shed some light on this topic.

I own a 1981 road Orioles Bob Bonner jersey that is a Rawlings Size 42, Set 1 (NOTE: my jersey has no provenance). It is my understanding that the Orioles did, in fact, use Rawlings jerseys for regular season games starting in 1981. They stopped using Wilson after 1980 (except for the orange alternates). HOWEVER, I have seen a picture of Ripken in a Wilson road jersey (see his 1982 Fleer rookie card). My guess is that they recycled some 1980 jerseys for Spring Training 1981). To the best of my knowledge, they NEVER worn Wilson road jerseys during the regular season in 1981.

If anyone wants to search old photos, some key differences between the 1980 Wilson and the 1981 Rawlings are:

Look at the "i" in Orioles. The dot of the "i" is connected to the rest of the letter on Wilson jerseys. You will always see separation between the dot and the base of the "i" on Rawlings.

The number size (both front and back) is bigger on Rawlings jerseys.

The Orioles script is slightly thinner with Rawlings vs. Wilson.

The font used on the nameplate is completely different (Rawlings used a taller font size). I compared the "R" on my Bonner jersey with the "R" on the Ripken auction jersey - they are completely different. My jersey has the same characteristics as the Leland's Ripken jersey.

This might be difficult to explain but the construction of the jerseys is completely different between Rawlings & Wilson. With Rawlings, you will see one seam from the collar running right down the top of the shoulder. Then the sleeves are sewn on to the arm openings. The Wilson sleeves, however, actually run right up to and connect with the collar opening. You will see two seams, one slightly lower on the the front shouilder and one slightly rounded seam running up the back of the shoulder.

Based on all this, here are my conclusions:

            1) The Orioles used Rawlings home and away jerseys in 1981.
            2) The Wilson auction jersey was NEVER worn during the regular season in 1981.
            3) It is possible that the Wilson jersey was worn in Spring Training 1981. Again, see his 1982 Fleer rookie baseball card. The photo is a Spring Training photo and he IS wearing a Wilson jersey. My guess is that it was taken in 1981.

            Hope this helps someone.

i think teams order a certain amount of "blank" jerseys. if a player is traded for, they will sometimes get a jersey with no name on back. i know a lady who did a lot of late sewing for the mets (stiches). i remember her telling me she did joe orsulak, and faberegas(sp) among others. in my opinion i believe the previous season get recycled and not kept in the clubhouse waiting to get a new life.

Here is the lelands auction referenced in this post for the Ripken rookie

December 2001 โ†’ Sports โ†’ Baseball Jerseys Lot 1153. 1981 Cal Ripken, Jr. Game Worn Rookie Jersey It has been only a couple of months since this man, who has starred in two decades of sports page headlines, walked off the field for the last time, leaving a hole in the game and in our hearts that will be all but impossible to fill. He sym-bolized something far more than just athletic greatness, though it goes without saying that he was in no short supply of that. He stood as an icon of the dignity of the American Work Ethic in the game that is purely and completely American. His consecutive game streak was the embodiment of a human quality of the most admirable sort, and of a wisdom that understands that you can only win if you show up and play. Surely nobody, not even Cal himself, could have imagined what was in store for him as he suited up in this historic road grey gamer during his first year in the Majors. Predating "The Streak," the jersey shows light but definite use from a season during which he made his first timid steps toward greatness in only thirty-nine plate appearances. All of the major details, of course, are utterly familiar to even the most casual baseball fan. "Orioles 8" emblazons the chest, with "Ripken 8" on verso. A closer inspection brings the importance into focus, with tail tagging from "Rawlings [size] 44" blooming a "Set 1 1981" flag tag above another reading "2 Inch Extra Length." A very, very observant eye will catch that the nameplate on back has been team-reinforced with white thread, giving the plate a slight ripple effect. This is par-ticularly noteworthy as this same effect is visible on the 1982 Topps Traded card, leading us to believe that Cal is wear-ing this very jersey in that photo. Very detailed LOA completes one of the most impressive packages we've ever had the honor to offer.
