Yeah, how could you prove it. Not that I'm doubting it happens. EBay has plenty of problems, but at least you can usually see who you're bidding against. Except for those red flag "User ID kept private" auctions.

Ebay has it's share of shill bidders, but i can generally live with the fact that a seller wants an extra $20 for an item, versus hundreds or thousands of dollars "extra" you may pay to a major auction.

Greg, are you stating that every auction that is private on eBay is a red flag issue? Please explain.

I made my point years ago that I keep certain auctions private so people do not email my bidders and either try to sell them a similar item or to tell them why they do not like my item. It is not their business, if they have an issue they can contact eBay or me personally, I provide my contact information easily available.

I started this practice about six years ago when someone emailed my bidder that my Upper Deck Authenticated Michael Jordan autographed jersey was bogus. I figured why do I need to have 3rd parties disrupting my auctions in such a manner?

I agree with you guys I do not understand why a auction house has to charge a 17-20 % buyers fee then charge $79. for shipping 2 jerseys. I do not have a problem with a company or people making money but hey lets be fair about it. Why would I want to spend my money to buy from them I guess if the item is worth it. As far as the time reset I remember that I got into a bidding war with a person on an MLB auction item and I would bid then the clock would reset to allow someone else to bid. It took us almost 2 hours to end the auction past the auction deadline. I guess now I really need to think before I make the bid.

It is to me. I don't bid on items where the bidder IDs are private. Same goes for sellers that have private feedback or don't accept Paypal. One has to protect themselves. Do I think there are valid reasons for hiding the identity of bidders? I suppose...I've heard the arguments for it. Do I think sellers use it as a tool to shill bid? Absolutely. Based on many of your posts that I've read, you seem to always give the benefit of the doubt to the seller, which is fine. I on the other hand, do not. But it should be of no concern to you, I'm just one of those $100 jersey guys.

Ok, your point is valid, but you are posting a general statement on a public forum so I figured we could discuss it - Weather you are a $100.00 jersey guy (which was me quoting what others mentioned to me) or a $10,000.00 jersey guy, you are still a person with an opinion.

I often use the thought innocent until proved otherwise, which often people use words such as "fake" on this forum without anything but their own views of an item. They don't research it before making a claim, or ask questions of the seller, so this is why I often back the sellers who are not on here defending themselves. Do you want to only have people bashing topics without a defense?

I do agree with you, I do not understand why people have hidden feedback, unless they are buying for resale to their customers and they do not want their customer to see what they are paying for items or maybe they are buying pornographic materials and they do not want people to see this.

Look at myself, I agreed with you, then I gave reasons I guess people do it!

Well, if the person/s listing the item in question won't respond, I guess you can be the court appointed voice for the bashees.

Perhaps we need to use kinder/gentler terms when referring to an item in question, and maybe that will encourage more posts by the folks we'd be interested to hear from. Something like "I would not feel comfortable purchasing this item." Maybe the people representing certain auction houses don't want to participate in a forum they wish would disappear. Maybe they simply don't have the time. It anyone's guess. I called an auction house guy to talk about a certain jersey once and although he was kind enough to take my call, he pretty much just gave me the "trust me, the jersey is good" response. We never even got to a discussion regarding the lettering style, tagging, etc. IMO, trust is a dangerous thing when it comes to sports memorabilia

Regarding eBay, a seller can shill his own auctions with hidden bidders and no one will know. We all know of a seller that shilled (and admitted it) with exposed bidding and he's still an active eBayer. What did he get? A 24 hr. suspension? On the other hand, I could email your current and past bidders until I reached my daily limit, then switch to another ID and email more. Then do it again the next day. Think I'd get suspended by eBay? Doubt it. Not too many enforced rules on eBay. They're just the venue, ya know.

A few weeks ago I was on the phone with eBay's Trust & Safety division discussing a copy of Playboy's 50th Anniversary book which I was selling that was ended by eBay.

I asked the guy who I could speak to about their policy who had something to do with setting the policy, and he told me he was as far as I could get. I told him that as a customer who has spent an average of $1000.00 a month with eBay over the past eight years I felt I should at least have a name and an address I could mail a letter about the discussion.

He had the balls to tell me that it was my choice to spend that money with eBay that no one forced me to. Needless to say, I blew up at him. I would never treat my customers that way, tell them that I didn't make them spend their money with my company.

Needless to say, when I received a reply with my complaint about this jerk in their T&S division I was given the information I requested to let eBay know of my dissatisfaction of how the classify Playboys.

Here is the catch, all of the other adult photography books I listed were allowed to run their 5 or 7 days without being ended. These were mature books, but not pornographic. If they would have had the word "Playboy" in the title they would have been ended. So stupid...

In regard to my original posting, I was wrong in my assumption.

I have been in contact with the auction company and they were kind enough to send me the actual bid sheet for that item.

There were four other bidders on this item, but only one at the end. Unlike other auction companies, this company's bid format lets you bid each increase instead of every other one. My rival bidder actually was able to bid the same amounts as me, but being as I placed the same higher bid first, I won the auction.

This auction was entirely legitimate and honest, and that is the reason I requested my original posting be removed.

I will have no concerns in the future doing business with this company.
