Re: Opinions on Herschel Walker helmet in Legendary auctions
By no means am I an expert but by looking at the images on Gettty I cant find anything that would make me believe its legit. The March 7th SI cover is close but the facemask isnt right.
Re: Opinions on Herschel Walker helmet in Legendary auctions
the helmet offered by legendary is a riddell m155 which is indeed what walker wore during his first year with the generals and during part of his second year - he then switched to a bike helmet. further, walker wore the same type of facemask shown in the auction his first year but switched styles the following year.
this helmet has been offered before (don't remember if it sold) - at that time additional photos were provided including shots of the handwritten numbers on the inside of the helmet (these shots have not been provided by legendary).
one thing that bothers me about this helmet is that one set of interior handwritten numbers, which happen to be the set that appears to be appropriately aged, has been tampered with (left photo). the other set, the number "34", strikes me as too new for the helmet (right photo).
for kicks you should contact legendary and ask what the date code of the helmet is (not the dates found on the padding which is mentioned in legendary's lot description) - tell legendary it can be found on the inside of the helmet, a small circle, heat-stamped into the crown area near the front of the inflatable crown pad. fwiw this helmet does match up well with walker's 1984 helmet which he wore for part of that, his second, season...

Re: Opinions on Herschel Walker helmet in Legendary auctions
Thanks aeneas! Always a pleasure to hear your insight! I will contact them ASAP to see if that info is availiable. I also think this helmet once belonged to a member of this forum. Maybe they can chime in on some background as to why they traded/sold it to whom ever is selling it now.
