Re: Multple SET 1 even back in the days
Dave,
Perhaps it depends on the team. This is certainly not the case with the Phils. During the 1970s and most of the 1980s, they strictly received only four jerseys (home set 1 and 2, and road set 1 and 2). I was contacted recently about a Steve Carlton 1977 road set 2 that is available. I was certainly interested (and befuddled) ... being that I have Lefty's set 2 road jersey from his 1977 Cy Young year. Sure enough, the one that I was offered was not even close.

Re: Multple SET 1 even back in the days
if you think of the set numbers in terms of the manufacturer and not the team you may be better off. wilson had a habit of set numbering consecutively as in 1st shirt/pants, 2nd shirt /pants ect. rawlings tended to go by production run or order. therefore, the 1st order (or run) would be set 1 this could include 2 or 3 of each shirt/pants. the next order (or run) would be set 2, ect. this is why it is not uncommon to see multiples of set 1 on rawlings jerseys or pants of the same player.Comment

Rawlings is different from Wilson. The years I'm talking about with the Phillies were Wilson years. There were four jerseys total, as stated in my last post. I would be amazed to find that this was not the way it worked for all teams that used Wilson during the 1970s/1980s. Rawlings is a completley different story ... their manufacturing of multiple jerseys for each set home and each set road threw quite the wrench into things. This is why a lot of folks won't touch items from the late 1980s to present. And then you have the Scoreboard Rawlings jerseys on top of it.

Re: Multple SET 1 even back in the days
First of all the tagging on the Gibbons jersey we are auctioning is 8 42 1 that is 8 (his uniform number) 42 (the size) 1 (set 1) so no it's not number changed. Also to my knowledge sets could and did include multiple jerseys depending on how many the team wanted for each player when they placed an order with the manufacturer. For instance Frank Pastore of the Reds (his last year with them was 1985) liked to change jerseys between innings when he pitched so had to have extra jerseys and I counted at least 8 from one year when inspecting a large group of Reds jerseys and they were all set 1 Rawlings though I can't remember the exact year I think it was 1984.

Re: Multple SET 1 even back in the days
So what would a wilson set 3 mean? Somebody mentioned on here that you'll see catchers issued 3 sets of jerseys more than others because of the wear and tear...Any ideas? I have a J. Bench set 3 wilson jersey and the other guy that posted said he had a reds jersey of a catcher that was set 3 too..Is that standard for Red's catchers?Comment

Re: Multple SET 1 even back in the days
Reid, as far as teams using wilson mfr with more than 2 home and road, the s.f.giants come to mind from 1973 thru 1976 they used wilson for the roads exclusively and those jerseys carried the set 1,2,3, designation. the 1976 home jerseys were exclusively wilson and they go to set 3 also. 1977 had them dropping the set designator and had only the players # and 2 digit year. exta jerseys were tagged only with the year. the n.i.c. was dropped. this practice continued thru 1986. players were issued 2 of each style during this period.Comment

Thanks. I'm having a bit of trouble understanding your posts, though. Did Wilson manufacture and distribute multiple jerseys to any team (e.g., the Giants) that were the same set (e.g., Set 2) and style (e.g., white/home) during the 1970s/1980s? If so, why would they operate this way with some teams and not others? I can tell you that, without question, they did not do this with the Phils.

Re: Multple SET 1 even back in the days
reid, the giants wilson jerseys/pants did not have multiples of (more than one) of any given set. for example if they ordered 3 jerseys for a player they would be identified as set 1,2,3. if they later ordered additional jerseys the set # would pick up from there. while this would seem, especially in the giants case, a little farfetched, given their cost concious ways but i did own in the past, a darrell thomas 1976 jersey w/ pants both tagged 1976 set 4 and before anybody asks, why he had 4 sets is a mystery to me. prior to 1976 the giants used 2 mfr's for their home knits the other mfr was mcauliffe who provided 1 set while wilson provided the other 2. wilson was the sole supplier of the road jerseys from 1972-76. before anyone jumps in yes i know the giants wore flannel roads in 1972 and beginning in late may, knit homes in 1972. prior to that they wore wilson flannels for the home jerseys.Comment

Re: Multple SET 1 even back in the days
for what it's worth, on 80s and 90s Wilson Blue Jays jerseys I've never seen duplicates of the same set number for a given player/year/jersey style. set numbers were unique to player/year/jersey style. they'd have a set 1 road jersey and set 1 home jersey but not two set 1 road jerseys.
