I have to admit though, this is usually the kind of thing you'd see after someone DID pass away... I had to go back and double-check!

could this photo of Wood with a Santo jersey hanging in the dugout have been taken when Ron was recuperating from an illness (i.e. leg amputation)?

Yes. Wood hung the jersey in the Cubs dugout during the 2003 postseason, a full seven years before Santo actually passed away.
