Joe DiMaggio 1968-69 Professional Model Coach's Bat

One of the greatest players of his generation, Joe DiMaggio possessed a grace and style that set him well apart from others. He did whatever was necessary for his team to win, and did it without pomp or showmanship. His standard was excellence.

DiMaggio joined the New york Yankees in 1936, and immediately led them to four consecutive World Championships during his first four years. In all, his Yankee teams won nine World Championships during DiMaggio's 13-year career. He was an All Star selection each of his 13 seasons, and won the Most Valuable Player Award three times – 1939, 1941, and 1947. He finished his career in 1951, and was elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1955. "The Yankee Clipper" is as much a part of Americana as he is a part of baseball history, and was one of the most idolized athletes of his era. To the nation, he was "Joltin' Joe" – all class, all the way.

Following his playing career, DiMaggio was subsequently hired by Charlie Finley as a coach and front office executive for the Oakland A's in 1968 and 1968. This bat is attributed to that post-career stint with the A's, and is sourced from Joe DiMaggio himself, via The DiMaggio Family Collection.

This uncracked bat was manufactured by Hillerich & Bradsby between 1965 – 1969 for Joe DiMaggio's personal post-career professional use. This bat is stamped D29L in the knob, a model first made to DiMaggio's specifications on 6/10/1939, and modified with a Ruth (large) knob in May, 1947 – for the remainder of his career it became his model of choice. This bat measures 36 inches in length, and weighs approximately 35.5 ounces. The bat is in near-mint condition, showing very light use in the form of light rack marks and light hit marks, with no handle preparation.

DiMaggio's personal H & B factory records show nine post-career orders of model D29L bats 36 inches / 33-36 ounces from 1963 through 1968. More specifically, two orders that match the model and dimensions of this bat were shipped to DiMaggio on 2/5/63 and 3/11/64. This is based on the small number 35 written on the knob, indicating the weight of the bat, a practice requested specifically by DiMaggio. The documented orders in 1967 and 1968 were 36 ounces in weight, however it is not known if all orders of the period were so recorded.

This is a rare opportunity to add a professional model Joe DiMaggio bat to your collection for a fraction of the cost of a DiMaggio career-specific game used bat. This bat is correct in model and dimensions to bats used by DiMaggio for the last several years of his Hall of Fame career, and was clearly ordered and received by him, apparently for use as a hitting instructor and/or coach during the mid-to-late 1960s. This bat comes with a Letter of Authenticity from The DiMaggio Family. View Lot Detail page

          Hi Dan--Thanks for your interest.

No, this bat is not the bat that was sold on Ebay on August 13, 2007. This bat has been in the possession of the consignor since its original purchase from Hunt Auctions several years ago. As you know, Hunt Auctions received numerous items on consignment from the DiMaggio Family and has offered pieces from the Joe DiMaggio Collection in a couple of their auctions over the past few years. As can be seen by comparing the LOA from DiMaggio's grandchildren with the bat in the GUU Auction (dimensions, color of marker on knob), the Hunt Auctions LOA, signed by DiMaggio's granddaughters, is specific to this bat

Good Luck. Please let me know if there are further questions.
